Rural Gem of the Coast
Heading out of Emerald Isle towards Swansboro, you'll pass through the small town of Cape Carteret. A scenic enclave at the edge of Carteret County, Cape Carteret is definitely worth more than just a passing glance. The small town is mostly residential, but you'll also find many antique stores, unique shops, kayak rental outfitters and other retailers worth a browse. During the summer, stop by one of the street-side stands selling fresh fruit and vegetables, including the delicious Bogue watermelons.
Get off Highway 24 and drive around the smaller and more scenic side roads that wind around town. The views will reveal some of the rural character of coastal Carolina, with farmlands and extraordinary views of the Bogue Sound. Explore these waters by kayak—lessons and rentals are available right in Cape Carteret. Or enjoy the beautiful views from the side of a fishing boat or while teeing off at a local golf course.
Friendly and old-fashioned, Cape Carteret is the more rural cousin of neighboring Swansboro, but is definitely a place not to be overlooked en route.
