Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament
By Anne Taylor Robertson
It all began in 1957, with the discovery of billfish off the coast of North Carolina. Originally thought to have been a sport reserved for warmer waters, Blue Marlin fishing was uncommon on the mid-Atlantic coast. However, after the onset of difficult times brought on by World War II, Morehead City was looking for a way out. Locals convinced a few business owners to post a cash prize for whoever would be lucky enough to find these big fish. After years in the making in hopes of turning around economic recession in a small, struggling American town, the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament is now considered by many to be the “Super Bowl” of fishing. Since the cleft of the tectonic plate where these elusive fish hide was discovered off the coast of Morehead City, fishing in the region has never been the same.
This year celebrates the 53rd anniversary of the tournament, and participants will gather from all edges of the nation to compete in this challenge. With prizes surpassing the million-dollar mark, this contest is for the best in the game. Over a week of events will keep the masses entertained and feeling proud as they partake in dinners, awards ceremonies, and more. A special junior tournament will take place for the youngsters as well.
The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament has been supporting local charities and non-profit organizations for years, reaching over two million dollars in charitable contributions to date. The event is not worth missing out on, whether you’re a local or a visitor to the Crystal Coast. Barbecue, seafood, beer and good times abound for all who “catch” this great week of competition and fun.
