Bethany Beach & Fenwick Island

The Quiet Resorts

With the bustling Ocean City to the south and the serene Delaware Seashore State Park to the north, the towns of Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island are sandwiched between two extremes. Roller coasters and arcades buzz to the south, while birds and the occasional dolphin set the scene up north. These two beach communities, known as the “quiet resorts,” seem to have adjusted to their opposing neighbors quite well, combining the excitement and amenities of the boardwalk with the beauty and serenity of nature. Today, the area is known as an ideal retreat for families and the perfect environment for a laid-back beach getaway.

The community of Bethany Beach actually began as a church retreat, and while vacationers of all lifestyles fill the many condos and homes today, it still echoes the tradition of those seeking a quiet seaside vacation. With loads of attractions just a short drive away, it is an ideal location for those who crave the serenity of the beach but also want quick access to more high-intensity fun and attractions.

The atmosphere in Bethany is decidedly laid-back—folks spend the day on the beach, occasionally stopping in at area shops, restaurants and cafes to visit with friends, peruse the merchandise or fill up until the next meal.

A short half-mile boardwalk is also a great place to stroll and enjoy the ocean views; stop in the few shops, restaurants and activities that line the way. Regular concerts at the boardwalk bandstand provide entertainment during the summer months.

Though Bethany Beach definitely has that small-town atmosphere, it also has all the modern amenities and services you could ask for such as great shopping, restaurants and plenty of things to do.

The same can be said of Fenwick Island, which lies right on the Delaware-Maryland state line, just north of Ocean City. Still quiet and laid-back, Fenwick offers some of the cleanest beaches in the region.

One of the most popular attractions in Fenwick is the Fenwick Island Lighthouse, an 89-foot lighthouse built in 1858. The towering white beacon is open for tours, although visitors are prohibited from climbing the tower.

Whether your idea of paradise involves a beach towel and a surfboard or a good meal and a day of shopping, the “quiet resorts” of Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island are sure to please.
