2012 RED WOLF HOWLINGS

Come and learn about the endangered red wolf during a short presentation and journey to the heart of the refuge for an adventurous attempt to hear the haunting sounds of our captive red wolves. The show runs Monday through Saturday at 8:30 PM. On Mondays, Children under 12 are FREE when accompanied by an adult. Prices range from $24.00 for Adults to $7.00 for Children 12 and under. Minty Mondays
Looking for a refreshing afternoon adventure? Children aged 6-12 years will enjoy a one-hour “minty” adventure searching for and learning all about mint in The Gardens. Young learners will make mint rubbings and plant mint to take home as well as enjoy mint cookies and mint ice cream. 2-3 p.m.  Limited to 30 participants. (Indoors and Outdoors) Free with admission.

Storybook Tuesdays
It’s story time in the Woodland Gardens. This tree-shaded garden area invites children of all ages, accompanied by an adult, to sit about our story stumps and enjoy tales about butterflies, bees, frogs, trees, flowers and other garden friends. After story time, join in a hands-on activity - root a plant to take home to your garden. (Outdoors, weather permitting). 10-11am. Free with garden admission.

(Wednesdays) Family Fun Scavenger Hunt
Come with the whole family on Wednesdays for an exciting garden scavenger hunt. Seek out clues scattered around The Gardens that will lead your family to a pot of gold. Each family member will take home some of the gold. (Outdoors, weather permitting) 10-11am. Free with garden admission.

(Thursdays) SCENTSational Thursday
Engage young senses in discovering a diversity of plants by touching, smelling, hearing, tasting and seeing in this one-hour discovery for you and your child. In addition to exploring with their senses, all participants will plant something to take home. (Outdoors, weather permitting) 10-11am. Free with garden admission.

(Fridays) Name that Tree
Fridays are Arbor Days at The Gardens. Children will complete a guided exploration of The Garden trees to learn fun facts and identifying features. Hands-on activities will help children learn about tree structure, vocabulary and identification. (Indoors and Outdoors, weather permitting) 10-11am. Free with garden admission.

VIRGINIA ESA CONTEST

Gardening Workshop: “Cloning with Quentin.”

30th Annual Rogallo Kite Festival
The 30th Annual Rogallo Kite Festival, hosted by Kitty Hawk Kites, is scheduled for June 9th and 10th, 2012, from 10A.M. to 4P.M. The festival will be held on the dunes of Jockey’s Ridge State Park, located at mile post 12.5. This is a free event and is open to the public. The Rogallo Kite Festival includes two days of kite flying to honor Francis Rogallo, NASA scientist and inventor of the flexible wing. Large single line kites, including a 100 ft. octopus, an 80 ft. scuba diver and a 50 ft. fish, will soar above Jockey’s Ridge. Kitty Hawk Kites will offer free stunt and power kite lessons on the dunes and free kite making at the Kitty Hawk Kites store directly across from the festival. 3933 N S. 2012 Fishing and Crabbing Rodeo
Once a year the North Pond of Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is opened up for fishing and crabbing for one morning only during an annual event known as the Fishing & Crabbing Rodeo. Crabbing/Fishing success varies from year to year. Some years, almost everyone (sometimes as many as 500 people) takes home a full bucket of crabs.

RHYTHM IN BLUE JAZZ ENSEMBLE
The Rhythm in Blue Jazz Ensemble of the U.S. Air Force Heritage of America Band will be in Duck for a special performance on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. on the Duck Town Green. The Elizabethan Gardens very own kitchen garden becomes a living textbook during this hands-on five-day camp. Outer Banks Sand Sculptor
A professional sandsculpture company will be on hand sculpting a huge sand creation! Come watch them work on this enormous sand castle all day on Wednesday, and until 2pm on Thursday. If you want to see sculpting from of the best in the world, be sure to stop by on Wednesday BEFORE noon on Thursday. At 2pm on Thursday, hang around for the Sand Clinic, given by the pro’s! Be sure to sign up for our fun Sand Castle competitions as well! Doctors from the Outer Banks Hospital will be giving FREE skin cancer screenings during the event - times TBA. Family Magic Show
Wednesday mornings. OBXtreme Magic features some of the most incredible magic and illusions performed by world-renowned illusionists Clive Allen & Tracy. The shows will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the Town Amphitheater on the following Wednesdays: June 27, July 11, July 18, July 25, August 1, and August 8. (There will be no show on Wednesday, July 4 since the Town will be holding its annual 4th of July Parade.) Although this event is free, tickets will be required for entry as the performances are fully underwritten and seating in the amphitheater is limited. Duck's 8th Annual Fourth of July Parade
Duck’s eighth annual Fourth of July Parade will be held on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 at 9:00 a.m., with a community social following at the Duck Town Park featuring music by Ruth Wyand, refreshments, and the awarding of parade trophies. The one-mile parade route is the same annually and begins at the crest of the hill on Scarborough Lane going eastward, continues down Ocean Way, and then turns onto Christopher Drive. Fabulous wines from around the world and produced by North Carolina and Virginia Wineries will be available for tasting as well as foods from the Outer Banks finest restaurants. Live entertainment will be provided by local and regional bands! This is an Outer Banks Relief Foundation Charity Event. At the Wright Brothers National Memorial (mile post 8) in Kill Devil Hills, NC. 10am-4pm, and Sunday, 10am-4pm. In addition to large kite displays, members of Kitty Hawk Kites staff will offer free stunt and power kite lessons throughout Saturday and Sunday. Inside the pavilion, Kitty Hawk Kites offers children’s kite making, beginning at 11AM each day. August 1
OBX GREAT GLOW RUN
Jockey’s Ridge State Park, Nags Head, NC 27959. Sprint, run or walk through the tallest sand dunes on the East Coast. This one mile family friendly run will take you up and down the sand dunes at dusk. Family friendly. All adults will receive a glow in the dark t-shirt. All children will receive a medal. Everyone will receive a glow stick and other goodies, as well as post-race snacks and drinks. All skill levels are encouraged. Feel free to bring your own glow sticks, flashlights, or battery powered light sources.

August 5
11th Annual OBX Sandbar 5K
Set on the wide flat sands in front of the historic ‘Old Station’ public bath house in Kitty Hawk.

Let’s Grow
This camp is smelly, tasty, healthy and full of color. Children explore the world of herbs and learn how they have been used throughout history as perfumes, flavors, medicines and fabric dyes. Campers will also delight in planning, planting and harvesting pizza ingredients for a palate-pleasing lesson. Price per child – Members: $150, Non-members: $175. OBX Watermelon Festival

Kitty Hawk Kites staff will be on site teaching kids how to use juggling sticks, balance boards, and much more. Activities range in price from FREE-$10. Proceeds go directly to the Wright Flight Foundation.

Surfing for Autism
An autism/asperger’s awareness event each Summer on the Outer Banks of NC while providing our children with an amazing experience and opportunity to surf. Each child is provided two surfers and a skilled therapist or teacher who are well educated on the special needs of our children with Autism. Together, they are paired up with children who have autism/asperger’s of all ages and introduce them to paddling, surfing, and a new way to have fun in the sun. 23rd Annual Alice Kelly Memorial Ladies Only Billfish Tournament
Leading up to the Pirate’s Cove Billfish Tournament the ladies get their turn to reel in the Big One! The Alice Kelly Tournament is an annual event the Sunday before the Billfish Tournament. The 23rd Annual Alice Kelly Tournament, held August 12th with registration on August 11th, is a fundraiser event for the Outer Banks Cancer Support Group. New World of the Arts
A juried exhibition featuring 80 selected artists from Vermont to Florida exhibiting and selling their works on the Manteo Waterfront. This two-day outdoor art show has been held since 1981. 621 South Highway 64, Manteo, NC 27954

Now in its 2nd year, Arnette’s regional Cash Pot Surf Series will feature eight, free-to-enter events, taking place throughout California, New Jersey, Hawaii, Florida and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The Cash Pot Surf Series will feature two divisions at each stop – Pro-Am and 16 & Under – with $3,000 in cash up-for-grabs at each event. Nags Head.
