A Peaceful Sufside Excursion
Well within a daytrip’s reach lie the islands of Hatteras and Ocracoke, quiet strips of sand and surf that represent all that makes up a relaxing beach vacation. With the Pamlico Sound on the west side of the islands and the vast Atlantic Ocean on the east coast, it’s easy to slip into the area’s laid-back atmosphere.Continuing south down State Highway NC-12, you’ll pass through the seven villages that make up Hatteras Island: Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras. Home to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Hatteras Island is famous for wide open beaches, a smattering of protected wildlife and rolling waves that draw in a great surfing crowd. Whether strolling on the sand or hiking through the forest, Hatteras is a welcoming retreat for any nature lover.
Connected only by the Hatteras Inlet Ferry, Ocracoke stands alone below Hatteras as an island as rich in history as it is in wildlife. When the first Europeans arrived on Ocracoke in the 1500s, the island was inhabited by Indians. Later, Ocracoke was known as a favorite haunt of Edward Teach, the infamous pirate Blackbeard. It wasn’t until 1990 that the village of Ocracoke was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Historic District includes the 1823 Ocracoke Lighthouse, the 1942 Coast Guard Station, several historic commercial buildings and more than 100 homes. Today, find homes, hotels, restaurants, cottages and stores all scattered around the beautiful harbor where boats of all sizes seek haven.
For a peaceful surfside excursion, Hatteras and Ocracoke offer the perfect escape to relaxation and rejuvenation.
