Standing Tall, Protecting All
Standing Tall, Protecting All
Jockey’s Ridge State Park is a national treasure and must-see destination on an Outer Banks vacation. Towering high above all, the majestic dune is the largest on the East Coast and part of a massive dune system spanning over five miles northward to include Nags Head Woods, Run Hill and the Wright Brothers’ Kill Devil Hill (initially part of the town of Kitty Hawk).
The Outer Banks’ chain of dunes is protected by thick maritime forest meandering through the community, the largest chunk being the 1,400 acres of Nags Head Woods Preserve designated by the North Carolina Nature Conservancy. This fascinating and shady retreat is an important part of the ecosystem of the barrier islands. The enchanting forest is home to beautiful and regal oaks, some of which are more than 500 years old, and the forest is accessible by meandering trails just waiting to be explored.
With fun activities, programs and plenty of room to explore, Jockey’s Ridge State Park boasts suitable thrills for people of all ages. Families with young children can explore the nature trails and discover the wildlife that lives in the dunes. Those with an adventurous side can try kayaking, swimming and windsurfing on the sound side of the park. Don’t miss out on a chance to try hang gliding, with lessons available right across the street from Kitty Hawk Kites. Hang gliding is permitted in specified areas of the park and is encouraged for those with certification.
